TigerKubz is piloting a free weekly storybook-based activity guide to help enable you to connect with your child at least 20 minutes a day in a fun, educational, and meaningful way.
It’s no surprise working parents are overwhelmed with the new reality of working from home while homeschooling our children. If you find your child being a little extra needy during this period, we want to let you know that this is completely normal and you are not alone. Oftentimes, the sudden appearance of strong emotions in children are triggered by major changes and events in their life. Sound familiar?
We found as parents trying to juggle both work, homeschooling, and the household, what really makes a difference in how our day progresses, is to connect with our children throughout the day. When connecting with your child consistently and meaningfully, by giving them your undivided, technology-free attention, you are giving them incentive to be more cooperative with your schedule and play independently.
Why is it based on storybooks and how does it work?
Reading is how little learners learn
TigerKubz’s philosophy, first and foremost, is that reading is THE most important and effective way to foster a child’s love of learning. When asked how to raise learners and readers, our recommendation is, in a pre-COVID-19 world, to prioritize reading whenever your child requests it. When there aren’t any physical barriers between work and home life, oftentimes, dropping what you’re doing to read a story just isn’t an option. This is especially true when the request may come multiple times a day. This is where we’re hoping to fill in that gap for you.
The format each day for the weekly story activity guide is simple:
- Read by watching the read aloud video of the story for the week.
- Learn by building connections between concepts from the story and your child’s world through active reading.
- Play one of six story extension activities to engage and build upon new concepts learned.
The weekly activity guides will be published here on our website, but we highly recommend subscribing to our mailing list so you can receive some extra content such as the story synopsis, guided questions, and a printable guide to have on hand.
One story per week to maximize learning potential
Yes, it is only one story per week because children LOVE to read the same thing over and over again and this is how they learn. Every time a child rereads a book, they are reinterpreting what they make of the story. They may stumble across a word or concept they didn’t catch or understand the previous time! As parents, it is our role to foster the connection between the story and his/her world through discussions.
If you’re noticing your child just isn’t into a book, that’s okay and don’t force it. Pointing out things in the story they can relate with and talking about it may peak their interest. Take time to explain unfamiliar words and concepts because, sometimes, disinterest may be a reaction to not understanding a vocabulary word.
We try our best to select books with relatable characters, engaging illustrations, and are fun to listen to, but sometimes they just may not like the story. If that is the case, let us know and we’ll recommend an alternate read aloud.
A video read aloud to give parents some free time
Yes, this involves some screen-time. We were a “no screen-time during the week” family before our whole world changed. As we adjusted to our new life and all of our children’s programs moved online, we found that watching read-aloud videos is a suitable compromise when we are not available to read and that is what works for us. If you prefer to read the actual book and have access to the same or similar books at home, do what works for your family ?.
What if I don’t have time to read the weekly story to engage meaningfully with my child?
Subscribe for a weekly cheat sheet
You are welcome to watch the read aloud video along with your child. Should you choose to use that time to get some work in or relax (we recommend it), we will provide you with a synopsis of the story. To make things even easier for you, there will be a cheat sheet of discussion questions to ask your child so that you can engage in a conversation about the story when you subscribe to our free mailing list.
Activities are simple and require little- to no-prep
The daily activities are curated based on the ease of preparation for a project so you and your child can work on it together (we’ll try our best to find activities to encourage independent play too). We will be mindful about the preparation required for the project and, when you subscribe to our mailing list, we will give you a heads up about any materials you’ll need for the upcoming week’s project.
Please share!
Lastly, while we are providing this resource for free, we’d like to ask a favor of you. Share this with your social network to support TigerKubz!

She is the founder and CEO of TigerKubz and is on a mission to empower parents with tools to easily engage their little learners.
